If your scrolling through Zara, Fashionova or literally any fashion brand releasing their take on the y2k trend then you’ve seen the must have top of 2023; a denim tub top. We aren’t ones to focus on trends, but we can appreciate a good up-cycle moment! Many of you probably have an old jean jacket lying around that is perfect for this simple DIY. If you not a professional seamstress don’t worry you can definitely do this in two steps without learning a new skill. If you do have some skills, you're really going to enjoy getting creative with you new top.
- Step one, plan. Create a moldboard or have an idea of what you want this Upcycle to look like. Maybe you need to hit up our girl Joannes or buy a couple more items to add distress or more lining. It’s always a surprise when you hit up the thrift but you don’t need to spend a million dollars for this project, unless you want to.
- If your not ready to enjoy the destruction of a jacket already in your closet then its time to hit the thrift store! When thrifting keep in mind a couple things. If you’re not allowed to try anything on, know your size measurements ahead of time and bring tape measure. It saves so much time and effort. If you don’t want to prep make sure find a jacket that fits you nice and snug and buttons all the way down. This is important, if it doesn’t bottom all the way you might alter the fit of it later.
- The jacket should be pretty basic, but patterns and washes add character, just keep in mind you are cutting it up so the sleeves and upper portion of your jacket will not be showing.
- Now you have the golden item, it's time to get DIY’ing. Lay the jacket out flat and buttoned up. Draw a line from armpit to armpit crossing the chest. Now cut along that line and voila. Your done. Flip the top upside down and you just DIY’ed the hottest top of 2023.
- The best part of this DIY is getting creative. Sew the pockets back on, add a fringe hem, distress the ribbing. It’s your new top.
